Machine Development Electrical Technician – Troy, MI

General Scope of Responsibility:

Design, build, install modify and start up production processing machinery.


  • Responsible for specification, construction, installation, start up and some design of systems involving: (Assistance from engineering on the larger and more complex systems) electrical panels and controls, electrical components, wiring, PLCs, AC and DC motors and drives, and power distribution.
  • Requires a working knowledge of PLC’s, computer control, and PLC programming.
  • Responsible for specifications of purchased components. Needs to know what can be bought vs. what to reuse.
  • Understanding of the project parts being worked on and how they fit in the total project. Use knowledge to make contributions to the project in a group environment.
  • Responsible for cost estimates for assigned sections of a large project.
  • Responsible for assembly, start up, debugging and documentation of equipment or modifications done.
  • Responsible for organizing own work and time on projects assigned. Estimate and control own time.
  • Be able to break down tasks and projects involved with so others can step in to help complete work in progress.
  • Mechanical machining and assembly as needed to help balance the group workload.
  • Perform duties of project manager on some smaller projects assigned by the corporate engineer manager as needed.
  • Some projects will require travel and an extended time away. {Ex. 1 to 2 weeks without conflicts of interest }
  • Extend own technology base yearly. Demonstrate growth in an area of technical expertise, or expand capabilities into a new area of expertise.
  • Be able to read, comprehend and operate equipment from manuals and or software.
  • Be a self-starter, independent worker.

QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Work Experience, etc.):

Minimum [Must have to be considered for the position]:

  • High School Degree or equivalent required
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in the following:
    • Control panel design
    • Fanuc robot installation, troubleshooting, repair and programming
    • Allen Bradley SLC 500 programming
    • Medium voltage wiring and conduit installation
    • Electrical troubleshooting of controls and variable speed drives
    • Reading, understanding, creating and modifying blueprints
    • Mechanical and hydraulic components
    • Computers to complete paperwork and to communicate with plant personnel
  • 3 years’ experience in programming PLC’s
  • Working knowledge of electrical code and code calculations
  • Able to lift up to 75 lbs. as required for the handling of machinery and components

Desired [Will provide job holder with added skill(s) to perform duties]:

  • Experience in either the building or modification of electrical control panels.
  • Experience with plastic extruders, film winders, in-line thermoformers, servo hydraulics, servo AC drives.


  • Have adequate human relations skills to interact with plant people and other people in the group, to accomplish tasks as well as provide and accept input.
  • Be able to work in a group environment as part of a project team, and make contributions.
