General Scope of Responsibility:  Develop and manage electrical and control system design, implementation and change processes.

DUTIES & ELEMENTS:

Responsibilities:

  • Develop electrical and controls system design solutions based on engineering principles and involvement in presentation of the solution to customer.
  • Provide technical support to external and internal customers.
  • Resolve operational problems related to projects and minimize delays or unexpected cost increases.
  • Responsible for project success whether project leader or as part of a project team.
  • Ensure all relevant safety objectives and legal requirements are observed for all work completed.
  • Support plants in pre-sales technical concept and budgeting activities.
  • Interpret project requirements, identify and address design parameters and engineering problems and ensure solutions are implemented accurately and within budget.

Engineering:

  • Analyze project requirements and perform technical calculations supporting design including electrical requirements, robotic safety standards, and motor controls.
  • Create and finalize designs to meet project requirements.
  • Create accurate Bill of Materials.
  • Define equipment and parts from external suppliers.
  • Conduct cost and time estimation. 

Project Execution:

  • Oversee project workflow and support internal and external resources to ensure timely delivery of projects, expected quality, and allotted budget.
  • Electrical, software design of customized solutions including manufacturing automation and safety systems. Able to maintain project scope and identify project creep.
  • Support manufacture, build and validation of systems which include pneumatics, servos, vfd’s, relays, communication networks, touchscreens, pushbuttons and robotic integration.
  • Create documentation such as user manuals, programming diagrams, network diagrams, and electrical drawings.
  • Ability to architect programs that are simple to test, well documented and versatile.

Project Completion:

  • Maintain accurate records and files according to quality standard.
  • Commission customized products and systems onsite and at customer facilities. 

Servicing

  • Modifies systems upon customer’s request and documents the amendments accordingly.
  • Provide high quality pre-project, design-in and post-project technical support to customer.
  • Performs service on Allen Bradley Servo Motors.
  • Must have panel construction knowledge.
  • Hands-on experience preferable.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

HUMAN RELATIONS:

The Controls Engineer (CE) works closely with, and often serves as support to a number of different departments and personnel. As a result, and in order to achieve optimum effectiveness, the CE must maintain a positive, cooperative relationship with various departments/individuals and must be responsive to their needs.

The CE interacts with all levels of the organization, i.e., with operators through senior managers.  To be effective, the CE must be sensitive to, and cooperatively blend the needs and goals of the various levels of the organization with the common denominator of ‘achieving organizational objectives’, i.e., effective launches, safety, quality, productivity, cost reduction, and positive employee/ employer relations.

Finally, in the role of a problem solver, the CE must remain objective and be able to make recommendations based on facts, regardless of whether those recommendations are popular.

General Scope of Responsibility:

Manage the ‘materials functions’ in order to assure 100% on-time delivery while maintaining control of inventories and a smooth manufacturing schedule.

Note: ‘Materials functions’ include the production scheduling, warehousing (including shipping & receiving), customer service, inventory control, and purchasing functions.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

Manage the personnel in the materials department

  • Identifies, and secures approval for the staffing needs of the materials department
  • Fills department with qualified personnel
  • Provides for professional development and cross training of department personnel
  • Evaluates and rates performance of Direct Reports
  • Establishes environment conductive to high performance
  • Willing to act as a back-up to scheduling, warehouse, and shipping functions and/or provide coverage.

Manage the systems and procedures needed to effectively perform the ‘materials functions’

  • Develops, maintains, improves, and assures the effective execution of documented procedures needed to effectively manage the ‘materials functions’ and comply with TS 16949 and ISO 14001
  • Keeps track of machines’ capacity and loading on existing, quoted, and future business to assure that the plant does not get overbooked; performs special capacity studies on request
  • Embraces Lean initiatives. Supports actions and tasks to achieve the “Visual Factory”. Applies Kan Ban, One Piece Flow, Heijunka Boards and other Lean scheduling techniques.

Manages raw, in process, and finished goods inventories

  • Assures inventory obsolescence is avoided
  • Assures obsolescence claims against our customers are filed and paid
  • Maintains pre-established finished and raw material inventory levels
  • Manages/tracks container fleet

Monitors and takes corrective/improvement action on key departmental metrics; e.g.,

  • Customer delivery performance metrics
  • Premium freight for in-bound and out-bound materials
  • Vendor delivery, performance
  • Days on Hand (DOH)

Performs and oversees various budget related tasks

  • Develops department overhead budget and assures bills and routers are correct during annual profit planning process
  • Manages the department overhead budget during the year
  • Assures bills and routers are entered correctly on new business/engineering changes
  • Assures errors in bills and routers are identified and eliminated

    To provide leadership and direction to all areas of plant operations to ensure that quality products are manufactured in a cost-effective and safe manner.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Establish and maintain a safe workplace for all employees. Establish suitability and effectiveness of the EMS.  Develop, implement, and monitor a comprehensive safety program that meets applicable safety regulations and corporate goals.  Assure all employees are working safely.
  • Ensure suitability and effectiveness of the QMS and that product quality standards are maintained and all operations are carried out in a consistent, controlled manner (e.g. as documented in the plant quality system).

 HUMAN RELATIONS:

The Plant Manager’s position is the cornerstone of a successful operation.  This person must be able to communicate effectively with all levels in the plant and at Corporate.  The Plant Manager must be sensitive to the needs and concerns of all subordinates.  Professionalism, respect and authority must be exhibited at all times. This person must be firm, yet fair and viewed as a leader at all times.

General Scope of Responsibility:  Manages the engineering planning & preparation activities necessary to launch assigned new jobs and engineering changes at budgeted standards.  Also, has engineering responsibility for resolving process problems and improving plant safety, quality, and productivity on assigned programs/processes.

DUTIES & ELEMENTS:

Manage Plant Launches/APQP activities

  • Ensure compliance and complete assigned APQP engineering activities
  • Evaluate effectiveness of proposed process to ensure optimal manufacturability, adherence to tolerance guidelines, functionality, tool design, machine design, cell layout, and safety and ergonomic concerns.
  • Initiate activities to secure and install new equipment or processes.
  • Lead cross-functional teams to develop PFMEA’s, mistake/error proofing.
  • Lead and/or assist with tooling design and development from prototype through manufacturing production stages as required by Program Manager.
  • Review product design with respect to materials, quality, function and manufacturability.
  • Execute required prototype and pre-launch production runs
  • Develop any required work instructions and set-up procedures for new processes
  • Train operators, supervisors, and maintenance personnel to run new process and equipment.
  • Ensure products meet quoted cycle time, material usage, and operator requirements.
  • Coordinate PPAP, PSA’s, Run at Rates runs with plant personnel to ensure a capable product.
  • Develop, document, employ, and manage machine tool standards and best practices.
  • Demonstrate compliance to plant and department IATF 16949 procedures.
  • Apply Lean manufacturing principles (e.g. 5S, value stream mapping, SMED, standardized work methods, etc.) to improve assigned processes.

Executes RVP engineering activities

  • Acts as Program Manager on house accounts as assigned.
  • Participate in the TFC process to assist in determining optimum processes, tooling, and material requirements for customer quotes.
  • Identifies and resolves process improvements leading to better cycle times, reduced spoilage, improved process capability and increased throughput.
  • Performs corrective action implementation on assigned customer complaints or internal failures as assigned
  • Assists production staff as process expert by utilizing troubleshooting, diagnosis, debugging, and other technical skills to keep production lines running at peak efficiency.
  • Performs safety analysis and implementation as assigned.

Responsible for planning & preparation activities necessary to launch assigned new jobs and engineering changes at quoted cycle rate and 100% quality.  Also, has lead engineering responsibility for providing support to production needs such as resolving process problems and improving safety, quality, and productivity on assigned programs/processes.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

Facilities and Engineering Projects

  • Responsible for process development effort to develop optimal cell layout, work instructions, process flow layout, set-up procedures, while adhering to safety, quality, and productivity protocols.
  • Coordinates internal engineering trials for PPAP’s, PSA’s, Run at Rates, etc.
  • Responsible for launches through development and engineering of new or changed products.
  • Responsible for the set-up or running of plant service parts as required.
  • Responsible for the programming and optimization robots as assigned.
  • Complete assigned projects on time
  • Assist in review and prioritization of projects.
  • Prepare and submit MERs as required to complete projects
  • Accomplishes the above tasks through compliance with the plant’s Advanced Planning Quality Procedures (APQP)

Contribute to Improvements in Plant Quality/Productivity

  • Resource for trouble-shooting process and equipment problems.

  • Assist in startup of new equipment/process as assigned.

General Scope of Responsibility: On assigned new products & engineering changes, develops an APQP Plan, Program Timeline and Program Gate Review Document then manages IAW the Plan & applicable procedures, to assure the product is launched on time – within budget – at or better than estimated cost – with zero defects to the customer – and to the satisfaction of the customer & our manufacturing plant.

DUTIES & ELEMENTS:
1. Manages assigned new products & engineering changes to existing products from order inception to successful launch.

a. Develops & gets team approval of APQP Plan. Updates Plan as needed.
b. Coordinates to assure APQP Plan activities are accomplished and milestone timing is met.
c. Serves as primary interface with the customer & the assigned CPAC manufacturing plant for all aspects of the program.
d. Assures RFQ’s are accomplished whenever costs drivers (e.g., blank size, adhesive bead length or width, packaging design,) are greater than on the originating RFQ for reasons such as engineering changes, volume changes, inaccurate originating RFQ, ….
e. Takes the action necessary to assure the product is launched on time – within budget – at or better than estimated part cost with consideration to material cost (part net & gross size, material thickness, basis weight,), head count, run rate & spoilage – with zero defects to the customer – and to the satisfaction of the customer & our manufacturing plant.
f. Retains Program records that are well organized, easy to retrieve & demonstrate compliance with the plants Order Execution/Product Realization Procedure and other applicable procedures.

2. Engineers assigned new products & changes to assure they are optimally designed for manufacturability, assembly & value with appropriate vendor.

a. Assures design inputs are understood, reviewed & incorporated into the design.
b. Directs & monitors Designer’s work.
c. Coordinates design reviews, with customer & internal personnel, to assure designs meet inputs.
d. Coordinates design verification & validation activities.
e. Maintains design records IAW the plants Order Execution/Product Realization Procedure.
f. Supervises designers, if assigned.

1. Assigns design projects
2. Provides leadership, performance feedback & motivation.
3. Determines training needs and assures training gets accomplished & is effective.
4. Evaluates & rates Designer’s performance IAW company directives.
5. Incorporate design costs into the TFC’s.

3. Monitors tool procurement activities on new products & changes with vendor

a. Coordinates with vendor and the tool makers to assure construction is done IAW timing & construction guidelines.

4. Coordinates/Leads packaging development activities on new products and changes

a. Assures packaging expectations of customer & CPAC Plant are understood.
b. Coordinates with customer & CPAC Plant to come up with a packaging plan/concept.
c. Coordinates the design & development of the packaging.
d. Coordinates reviews, with customer & internal personnel, to assure package design is acceptable.
e. Coordinates verification & validation activities.
f. Complete the customer forms as required.

5. Reports on program progress in monthly Vehicle Launch Meetings (VLM’s).

a. Updates Vehicle Launch Notes (VLN’s) in advance of, and after VLM’s IAW timing directives.
b. Assures VLNs are clear, concise, and relevant & meet the requirements of format & content directives.
c. Comes to VLM meetings with complete & detailed knowledge of the status of their programs.

6. Performs various IATF16949 duties:

a. Operates IAW the plants Order Execution/Product Realization Procedure and other applicable procedures.
b. Per 1f above (see page 1), retains records that are well organized, easy to retrieve & demonstrate compliance with plants Order Execution/Product Realization Procedure, Gate Review Document, other applicable procedures, and is responsible to update “Lessons Learned” and “Best Practices” shared folders.
c. Demonstrates conformance with IATF16949 procedures in internal and external IATF16949 audits, and compliance with Customer Specific Requirements.
d. Performs corrective action activity, as assigned, on issues arising from any areas of this responsibility (part design, tooling, and/or packaging) and for audit Action Requests (AR’s) and/or Opportunities for Improvement (OFI’s) in the Product Launch/Program Management/Design Control area.

Program Managers interface with, lead, and/or influence a wide variety of individuals & positions (from shop floor operators to Senior Managers) at the customer, within CPAC, and at suppliers including tooling suppliers.  As such, they need to make a good first impression – wear well over time – be professional – and engender an atmosphere of trust & team work. 

General Scope of Responsibility:

Does control planning, statistical studies and corrective/preventive action aimed at assuring we ship 100% defect free product to our customers and we reduce internal failures.

SPECIFIC DUTIES & ELEMENTS:

Support program launch and APQP process for Quality Department.

  • Participate in program launch meetings.
  • Complete assigned areas of APQP checklist.
  • Manage APQP activities identified on the quality checklist.
  • Submit PPAP to customers.
  • Complete online PPAP submissions using GM GQTS, Ford VPP and Chrysler CQMS.
  • Request PPAP from suppliers.
  • Spearhead the gage review process and development of inspection tools for the floor.
  • Manage and submit IMDS for plant.

Maintain control system documents (Control plans and all documents needed to execute the control plans).

  • Develop new control system documents as required.
  • Revise existing control system documents as needed per customer request, internal process improvements, or resulting from corrective action efforts.
  • Assure documents are maintained under proper document control.
  • Train operational personnel on use of control system documents.
  • Monitor and take action to assure the effective use of control system documents.

Lead corrective action efforts for customer quality complaints, internally identified quality issues and supplier issues.

  • Lead assigned corrective action efforts.
  • Document corrective action effort.
  • Certify product to establish clean point to customer and monitor corrected product for specified time period.
  • Answer customer complaints using customer required formats and systems including GM GQTS, Chrysler E Supplier Connect Non-Conformance Tracking(NCT) & eCIMs, IAC Supplier Quality Tracking System(SQTS), Ford Covisint Supplier Improvement Metrics (SIM), Nissan 8D & Countermeasure Report, Mitsubishi Defect & Problem Tracking Sheet.

Maintain Gage Calibration System.

  • Calibrate and maintain all internal measuring instruments, check fixtures, check mylars for both manufacturing plant and R&D laboratory to ISO 16949 requirements.
  • Schedule and manage all external calibration sources.
  • Design and Perform all Measurement System Analysis (MSA) required.
  • Lead and/or participate in design and construction of new gages and changes to existing gages.
  • Train operational personnel on use of check fixtures and other measuring instruments.
  • Create operator instructions for all gages.

Dimensional Layouts

  • Perform dimensional layouts using open layout methods.
  • Perform dimensional layouts for PPAP submissions on new product, and changes to existing product per AIAG or customer formats.
  • Perform dimensional layouts for customers requiring annual layouts.

Represent Cadillac Products’ during visits to customers and suppliers to resolve quality complaints and other issues.

  • Travel to customer plants to investigate and resolve customer complaints.
  • Travel to suppliers to investigate supplier issues.
  • Assist Purchasing in supplier development.
  • Write Trip Reports for all travel.
  • Identify action required as a result of visits and assure action is taken.
  • Assist sister plants using IMDS knowledge.

 

Develop, lead and participate in statistical studies to analyze and improve processes and monitor incoming supplier materials.

  • Develop method of gathering data for statistical studies.
  • Direct or participate in collection of data for statistical studies.
  • Input and process data in a PC based statistical program.
  • Analyze results of statistical studies.
  • Recommend process improvements based on results of statistical studies.
  • Assist in implementation of process improvements.
  • Monitor results of processing improvements.
  • Review incoming supplier material certifications and enter/monitor key product characteristics in statistical program.

QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Work Experience, etc.):

Minimum [Must have to be considered for the position]:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 or more years’ related automotive experience using quality problem-solving techniques.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience using word processing, spreadsheet and statistical software.
  • Able to travel a minimum of 10% to customers due to quality issues.
  • Available to work overtime and weekends.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms and navigate tight spaces.
